25 Years Ago – 1999
The Mandan Braves girls are enjoying a successful run of basketball victories. The girls faced the West Fargo Packers this past weekend and, led by the efforts of Heidi Zander with 21 points, the Mandan girls came out ahead of West Fargo, 70-80. Other top scorers for the Braves were Kari Hanson, 17 points, Angie Frenzel, 10; and Nikki Wright, 9. Prior to this game, the Braves had traveled to Bismarck Century and secured another victory, 66-34. Leading scorers were Amy Friesz, 18 points, followed by Angie Fenzel, 12.
Members of the Mandan High School drama department produced “The Wizard of Oz” this past weekend at the high school auditorium. The cast included Kami House as Dorothy; Tony Helvig as the Tin Man; Richard Fiske as the Cowardly Lion; Danny Meidinger as the Scarecrow; Sarah Rowe as Glinda the Good Witch; and Laura Lanz as the Wicked Witch. The play also featured more than 40 elementary kids performing various roles in Munchkin Land. Stage director was Anesa Pfeifer-Johnson; technical director was Pat Pins, assisted by Barb Price. Keri Hess was the orchestra director; choreographer was Michelle Stockert, assisted by Jan Gilbertson.

50 Years Ago – 1974
The First Presbyterian Church of Mandan recently held their annual Foreign Festival, featuring hundreds of articles, ordered through the Church World Service self-help program with all money returning to the people who made the items. It was their largest sale in the five-year history of the event. In charge of the arrangements were Mrs. Wayne Willis, Mrs. Stuart Shortt and Mrs. A. Ben Dove.
Wedding vows were renewed by Mr. and Mrs. Jacob A. Helbling in a 25th Anniversary ceremony at Christ the King Catholic Church, with Rev. John Kuhn officiating. A social hour, reception and dance followed at the Mandan Moose Lodge. Jacob Helbling married the former Rose Boehm on Oct. 25, 1949, and became the parents of six children- Yvonne, Bismarck; Sonja and Mrs. Don (Marlys) Rychlik, both of Mandan, and Jackie Gloria and LeRoy at home, southwest of Mandan…
