CPD officer is murdered on-duty, 2 detained

CHICAGO — A Chicago police officer was shot and killed by machine gun fire while conducting an investigation in the Chatham neighborhood Monday evening. Officials say the murderer and another individual are in custody.

Officer Enrique Martinez and his partners stopped a vehicle with three occupants in the 8000 block of South Ingleside around 8 p.m., officials said. As the officers approached the vehicle, someone inside the car opened fire, killing Martinez and a 23-year-old man inside the gunman’s car, according to CPD Supt. Larry Snelling.

In video recorded from a nearby home, someone is heard repeatedly saying, “Stop reaching,” with their voice growing louder and more urgent each time. Suddenly, a horrific blast of automatic gunfire is heard, followed by silence and screaming. One officer returned fire, Snelling said…
