BOSTON — Massachusetts’ highest court is making plans to hear Karen Read’s final attempt to have some charges dropped before her second trial begins in connection with the death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe.
Read’s first murder trial ended in a hung jury. However, the defense said several jurors have come forward to report they were ready to acquit her of second-degree murder. The Superior Court judge denied her motion to dismiss the charges, a decision that the defense is now appealing to the Supreme Judicial Court.
According to the SJC docket, the court set a deadline of Sept. 25 for Read’s legal team to file a brief about the case. The prosecution will be given until Oct. 16 to file its brief and Read’s attorneys will have until Oct. 25 to file a reply…
