The science behind changing fall colors

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – Enjoy it while it lasts, some of the best fall foliage is going on right now across Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.

All the nice weather recently has given us a lot of chances to get out and enjoy it. As the trees head into their dormancy stage for the winter, this spectacular show is all thanks to what happens at the molecular level.

“The green that we see throughout the summer is caused by a green pigment called chlorophyll. And that’s responsible for photosynthesis, converting all of the sunlight into food for the tree,” Emily Uhlman, a natural resources crew leader with Metroparks Toledo said. “Right now, that chlorophyll is breaking down in the leaf. All of these colors we’re seeing right now are always present in the leaf, but because that green pigment is breaking down, these colors are really able to shine through.”…
