NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — More than 20 fire companies and 100 firefighters are on scene of an industrial building fire Wednesday morning on River Street.
New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said crews were dispatched around 6:45 a.m. to 36 River St.

On scene, crews reported smoke coming from the second floor. The fire grew, becoming what fire officials describe as a four-alarm fire by 8 a.m.
Elicker said the building has multiple uses, including an auto body shop, food truck storage, and other storage. He said some people reported hearing explosions, which he said indicates some propane tanks were likely inside.
Two workers with the auto body shop were sleeping in the building at the time of the fire but got out safely. He said both allegedly had permission from the building owner to sleep there…
