Connecticut fisherman sentenced in Massachusetts after evading taxes on $1.2 million income

BOSTON — A Connecticut man received a one year, one day sentence on Thursday for evading taxes on income he earned as a commercial fisherman in Massachusetts, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Brian Kobus, of Durham, worked as a commercial fisherman and deckhand for multiple fishing companies in Massachusetts, according to court documents and statements made in court, which said that Kobus was paid by check after each fishing trip.

Prosecutors said that Kobus received over $1.2 million in fishing income between 2011 and 2013, and 2017 through 2021, but he never filed a federal income tax return or paid the taxes he owed during those periods…
