Fake social media threats causing rising costs for local law enforcement

Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM)— Social media threats targeting schools nationally and locally are taking a toll on law enforcement, spanning federal, state and local agencies.

Since school started, the FBI’s Buffalo Field Office said it’s diverting agents weekly for alleged threats in our region.

“It does take agencies that are working other violations to come in and then investigate those matters to determine whether they are valid,” said Mark Grimm, supervisory special agent for the office in Buffalo. “It’s hugely impactful on the division.”…
