Louisiana and Arkansas Departments of Transportation working together diligently to reopen major highways closed due to snow and ice, updates provided regarding road closures

Work continues today on the reopening of major highways closed because of snow and ice. Large portions of I-10 and I-55 are closed as well as U-S 90 in Terrebonne and Lafourche Parishes. DOTD spokesperson Rodney Mallett says they’ve been chipping away on six inches of ice on elevated portions of our highway system, and they expect major progress today.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done, and the best friend that we have today is, besides, no slight to our good friends in Arkansas who have worked as tirelessly as the men and women we have at DOTD, but our best friend today is going to be the sun,” Mallett said.

Mallett says the sun has been a major ally in the thawing of our roads, but he also credits the extensive work done by DOTD crews.

“We spent the whole night salting and brining and plowing, so when the sun did its work, it was going to have an easier time than if it was just a big block of ice,” Mallett explained…
