Everyone likely has a favorite sub shop location. Maybe it’s a national chain like Subway, Jimmy John’s or Jersey Mike’s. Perhaps it’s a local spot like Gonella’s in metro Detroit.
Southeast Michigan has been home to a sub shop chain with deep roots in Update New York, DiBella’s. The chain is based in Rochester and began as an Italian grocer and quickly shifted to focusing on sub sandwiches. The chain has grown from their western New York base to locations in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.

At its peak, DiBella’s had 5 locations in Michigan – all in the Detroit area. However at the end of September 2024, the chain abruptly closed each location in Michigan save for one location in Ann Arbor. That means previous locations in Troy, Warren, Shelby Twp and Bingham Farms are now gone…
