Outdoor YMCA classroom breaks ground

AKRON — On Oct. 7, Akron Area YMCA early care and education center took a “groundbreaking” approach to encourage children to think outside the box and the classroom.

As a result of a $75,000 PNC Foundation grant, toddler and pre-K children at Westminster YMCA will enjoy an outdoor classroom complete with a sensory station, stage, building center, dirt digging area, opportunities for gardening, gathering, art and music and movement.

“In a world where so much emphasis is placed on devices and technology, it’s refreshing to be awarded funds for children to get back to nature and learn through outdoor and creative play,” said Jill Kolesar, president and CEO of the Akron Area YMCA, where the Westminster location is centered. “I’m so grateful for this collaboration with PNC as the project will benefit the physical and mental well-being of our children.”…
