York City Council upholds veto of immigrant protection law

YORK, Pa. — The York City Council upheld Mayor Michael Helfrich’s veto of an ordinance intended to protect immigrants and refugees in the city in a vote on Tuesday night.

The 3-2 vote to override was one vote short of the necessary four needed to override the veto. No council member changed their vote from the original adoption of the ordinance on December 17.

The ordinance, known informally as the “York Trust Act,” would have prohibited city employees, including police, from asking about residents’ immigration status or working with federal agencies to locate a person based on immigration status unless required by law.
