Last Sunday, loved ones gathered to mark the somber first anniversary of 14-year-old Gilian Ragan’s death, a Chapparal High School student who met a tragic end in a UTV crash in Scottsdale. According to ABC15, the crash also injured seven other children and led to the arrest and subsequent sentencing of a 14-year-old to probation and community service. Ragan’s family, seeking greater accountability, has filed a civil lawsuit.
While one tragedy continues its course through the legal system, another unfolds with desperate urgency. A fundraiser was held on Saturday, aiming to sell around 600 chicken plates to cover medical and funeral expenses for victims of a recent ATV accident. In critical condition following the crash is 11-year-old Jesse Jeremiah Cantu, whose family member Reselma De La Rosa informed ValleyCentral, “All proceeds from the fundraiser will go to medical expenses and funeral arraignments.” Prior to the fundraiser, the crash claimed the life of 5-year-old Jariel Cantu, with his older brother Jesse remaining in a critical but stable condition.
Arizona officials are implementing new measures in hopes of preventing future tragedies.
