Montgomery County overpaid $2.5M for speed cameras, new OIG report shows

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. — A new report for the Office of the Montgomery County Inspector General (OIG) suggests that the county’s police department needs to strengthen its speed camera enforcement program.

According to OIG, Montgomery County began work with a contracted company in 2022 to install a digital camera system to capture drivers who are speeding or running through red lights. As part of the agreement, the contractor is responsible for collecting all fines and waiving penalties at the county’s direction, tracking payments and more.

In 2023, the OIG says Montgomery County paid the contractor more than $5 million for operating costs. Under the contract, the contractor is entitled to nearly $6,000 per speed camera in operation. However, the County amended the contract after the “contractor was not meeting the terms of the original contract” the OIG report reads…
