JAMES ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) – As the Holiday Festival of Lights closes for its last night, it will feature a fireworks celebration. However, for those celebrating at home, officials have safety tips if you’re using fireworks.
For local hospitals like the MUSC Health University Medical Center, it is the busiest night of the year. Medical officials said they see six or seven times the amount of patients regularly admitted to the burn unit, which comes from firework injuries. Dr. Steven Kahn, chief of burn surgery at MUSC, gave several safety tips.
“Everyone except the person who’s lighting should be 10 to 20 feet back, particularly children. If the firework doesn’t go off never ever ever lean over it. Make sure you have your glasses on,” Dr. Kahn said. “The safest thing to do is actually hit it with a hose or pour water on, but never ever ever lean over any kind of firework.”…
