Name suggestions for new baby pygmy hippo at Metro Richmond Zoo

The Metro Richmond Zoo’s new pygmy hippo was born on December 9, 2024 to parents Iris and Corwin. According to WRIC 8 News, the zoo is asking for the public’s help in naming its new addition.

Suggested names

The zoo has narrowed down the following four names for the public to vote on to name the baby pygmy hippo:

  • Poppy — a flower like Iris, her mother’s name
  • Juniper — an evergreen shrub to remember winter
  • Hammie Mae — a sweet and southern tie to Virginia ham
  • Omi — which means “water” in Yoruba, a language spoken in West Africa

The poll will close at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 31, 2024. The official name is to be announced on New Year’s Day. Therefore, the pygmy hippo will start the new year with a name.
