In Colonial Heights, Virginia, the local animal control office had been called to report seven puppies who had been abandoned in a cardboard potato chips box on Thursday morning.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) of Petersburg and Colonial Heights responded to the emergency call after the puppies had been left outside the front door of the organization. Temperatures in the morning outside, when the puppies were found, were between 45 and 50 degrees. The puppies were no more than two-weeks-old and when found, they were covered in urine and feces stuck to their tiny bodies.

These poor babies are only around 2-weeks-old, eyes barely open to not even open at all. They had urine staining and feces stuck to their bodies. THIS IS NOT THE ANSWER!!!!!! Not only are these puppies’ way too young to be away from their mom but it was only around 45-50 degrees this morning. We are very thankful that the SPCA was open today and the staff member who found them took immediate action by bringing them inside the heated building and putting them in a clean tote and a nice warm blanket because if they weren’t who knows what would’ve happened to these babies.

The puppies were immediately brought inside and cleaned up, wrapped in warm blankets and transferred later in the day to the Richmond Ruff House rescue center for neonate care.

One of the dogs already at the rescue named Libby had still been nursing her puppies. When she saw the puppies, she climbed in and started to clean them up. She did lie down with them, but there was no luck with nursing; several repeat tries but no luck.

And so there was no alternative except bottle feeding. From past experience at the rescue, it has taken 30 cans of powdered formula to get a litter of five-week-old puppies from the two week mark to eating on their own. And now there are seven puppies.
