Doctor aims to change menopause conversation for women in Cincinnati

CINCINNATI (WKRC) — A local doctor is working to shift the conversation surrounding women and menopause. Dr. Betsy LeRoy, an obstetrician-gynecologist with TriHealth Women’s Services, has dedicated her practice to supporting women through menopause after realizing the importance of aiding women at every life stage.

“Menopause technically is defined as a year without cycles—a year without periods,” said Dr. LeRoy. “The average is anywhere between maybe 45 and 55, and we see sort of a median age of about 51.”

Dr. LeRoy’s goal is to overcome the stigma associated with this transitional time in life. She said, “That’s an interesting thing, I explore that in my mind all the time. You really celebrate the reproductive years for women, and then once you hit that time frame, maybe the utility or usefulness is not there as much. I think that might be part of it. Also, because women in that time frame are so busy caring for other members of their family—maybe they have children or aging parents—putting their needs out there at that time frame is not something that’s considered tasteful to talk about.”…
