Central Florida expands shelter access amid mid-20 degree wind chill

Central Florida government officials and nonprofits are expanding access to shelters ahead of unusually cold temperatures through the rest of the week and heading into the weekend.

The National Weather Service issued a Cold Weather Advisory for the region lasting for Friday morning from 3 a.m. to 9 a.m., with wind chills forecast to be as low as the mid-20s. Forecast lows for the NWS weather station at the Orlando Executive Airport are 38 degrees Thursday night and 35 degrees Friday night.

The Homeless Services Network of Central Florida has been coordinating efforts to add extra capacity to existing shelters when temperatures go below 40 degrees, while it is up to individual counties to open extra shelters.
