What Ohioans think about federal push to end subminimum wages for workers with disabilities

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (WOIO) – The U.S. Department of Labor has announced a plan to do away with exemptions that have allowed subminimum wages for decades for employees with disabilities.

“They’re really one of the best employees anybody could have, so they should be paid the same amount as anyone else,” said Laurie Kowalski.

Laurie’s son Alex has Down Syndrome, and has put in plenty of work at programs that get people with disabilities ready for the workforce before securing two jobs…
