Expert: ‘Stomach bug’ outbreaks typical for this time of year, but people can take precautions

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released data that shows a recent spike in outbreaks of norovirus — a highly contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. One expert said that spike is pretty typical for this time of year, but people can still take precautions to avoid getting sick.

Norovirus is sometimes known as the “stomach bug” or the “stomach flu,” but is not related to the flu virus.

Signs and symptoms can include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, stomach pain, fever, headaches or body aches. Those will typically appear about 12 to 48 hours after exposure. Symptoms will usually last between one to three days…
