CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A bill filed in the North Carolina Senate would remove the cap on how much money a person who was wrongfully convicted can receive once exonerated.
Senate Bill 704, named “The Ronnie Long No Cap Act,” would remove the limit on how much money wrongfully imprisoned people receive once they’re released. Long, who is from Concord, served 44 years in prison for a rape he didn’t commit. WCNC Charlotte’s Michelle Boudin chronicled Long’s fight for freedom that culminated with his release from prison in August 2020.
“You put me in the penitentiary for 44 years and during that time you destroy evidence, you lose evidence, tamper with the jury, you commit perjury and everything about the trial was a mockery,” Long said…
