MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — The city of Myrtle Beach will apply for a $33,000 grant that would allow it to buy 50 sets of gas masks to be used by uniformed personnel during “response scenarios.”
A motion approved by the city council Tuesday morning would allow the city manager to apply for the money through the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. The city is not required to provide any matching funds.

The masks would protect personnel during hazmat situations and “allow for officers to respond accordingly during critical incidents,” according to a meeting agenda. The mask would be used with other duty gear and training.
In other action on Tuesday, the city council:
- approved the final reading of an ordinance allowing a bond sale to raise $81 million to pay for renovating the facade of the city’s convention center ($20 million), making infrastructure and parking improvements in the Arts & Innovation district ($16.5 million) and refunding principal balances on a series of 2014 bond issues ($40 million).
- approved the final reading of a one-year lease extension with the owners of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans Minor League Baseball team.
- approved a motion to allocate $1.5 million of hospitality tax revenue to pay for improvements at the Whispering Pines golf course. The work includes replanting all 18 greens and practice greens, renovating bunkers, removing trees, repaving the parking lot, replacing the irrigation pump house and replacing irrigation heads.
