Dead humpback whale washes ashore on Outer Banks coast

NAGS HEAD, N.C. — A dead female humpback whale has washed ashore on the Outer Banks surf, according to officials with North Carolina Aquariums.

The carcass is still floating around in the surf near Shad Street in Corolla, according to Michael Remige, director of the N.C. Aquarium at Jenette’s Pier. Remige said it appears to be a badly decomposed juvenile.

It wasn’t safe for responders to get close as of Thursday afternoon, so details are limited. The carcass was still stuck on the sandbar as of 3 p.m. Responders are hoping it will dislodge overnight in the high tide and wash in tomorrow morning…
