Homework centers prove successful for elementary school students

A program designed to provide a secure, supervised environment for students in first through fifth grade focusing on homework, studying, and social skills has helped bring up test scores and grades at some schools within the DeKalb County School District (DCSD).

According to officials with SCANA Energy, data collected from two DCSD schools – Princeton Elementary in Lithonia and Stone Mill Elementary in Stone Mountain – showed that students who utilized SCANA Energy’s Homework Centers saw improvements in math, reading, and language arts during the 2023-24 school year.

“In our end of the year summary report, we found that 100 percent of students in first, second, third and fifth grade at the homework center showed improvement in math at Princeton Elementary, while at Stone Mill Elementary, where the majority of students come from English as a Second Language (ESL) families, 100 percent of students showed improvement in English/Language Arts, highlighting the program’s impact on language proficiency,” stated SCANA Energy officials…
