CRANSTON, R.I. (WJAR) — Distribution began Saturday morning for Rhode Island commercial license plates featuring an endangered mako shark. It took place outside the DMV main office in Cranston.
Sales of the shark plates – a portion of which benefits the Wakefield, RI-based Atlantic Shark Institute – have been strong from the beginning.

According to Jon Dodd, executive director of the institute, within a day of announcing the design three years ago enough pre-orders came in to meet the requirement to enter production for passenger vehicles.
Next came combination plates (which can be used on lighter-duty, commercial-type vehicles) and as of Saturday, commercial plates. Dodd said they’re now taking orders for shark plates for motorcycles, adding they’re Rhode Island’s fastest-selling special plates to raise funds for charity…
