Hurricane Helene causes closings throughout DeKalb County

Schools, libraries, businesses, and municipalities announced closings throughout DeKalb County as a major storm, predicted to bring damaging winds and flooding to the metro-Atlanta area, barrels closer.

Late in the afternoon on Sept. 25, officials with DeKalb County School District (DCSD) and City Schools of Decatur (CSD) announced that both school districts would be closed on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27. Devon Horton, superintendent of DCSD, said he made his decision to close schools after carefully considering weather forecasts that predicted dangerous conditions such as high winds, power outages, downed trees, and hazardous roads.

“The safety and wellbeing of our students, staff, and families remain (DCSD’s) top priority,” said Horton. “Given the severity of the weather conditions expected from Hurricane Helene, closing schools and canceling all activities is the most responsible course of action to protect our community. We thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation during this time of uncertainty.”…
