Stamford schools to stop free lunch program to save money, passing on costs to parents

STAMFORD — Just under half of Stamford Public Schools families will be expected to pay for school meals starting this fall because of budgetary constraints.

In order for the district to continue to provide meals free of cost to all families, it would need to spend an estimated $1 million in the upcoming fiscal year. However, officials decided to cut that amount from the proposed 2025-26 operating budget in an effort to bring down the total monetary ask.

“This may have been the most difficult reduction included in this request,” said Ryan Fealey, the district’s finance director, during a meeting of the Board of Education’s Fiscal Committee on Jan. 21. “The administration strongly believes in the importance of the program and its impact on Stamford students and families.”…
