Remembering the 2007 Tornado Outbreak: 17 Years Since Devastation Hit Kentucky and Illinois

Paducah, KY – Seventeen years ago, on October 18, 2007, a devastating severe weather outbreak struck Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. Sixteen tornadoes touched down, with Daviess County, KY, and Spencer County, IN, bearing the brunt of the damage. An EF-3 tornado tore through Daviess County, leaving a trail of destruction.

According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, the storm system also unleashed two F-2 tornadoes in southern Illinois. These tornadoes traveled a combined 23 miles, damaging homes and overturning vehicles. One tornado passed near the Lake of Egypt, south of Marion, IL, where mobile homes were destroyed. Another caused injuries after a semi-truck overturned along Interstates 57 and 24.

The storms were accompanied by large hail and powerful winds, prompting the issuance of over 130 warnings. The damage was extensive, with many homes and businesses affected, and relief efforts quickly mobilized to assist the hardest-hit communities…
