MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) – The city is getting only a dollar from a real estate transaction approved Tuesday, but local leaders are hoping for so much more from the property off of Shelton Beach Road Extension.
The 6-0 vote transfers 214 acres to a nonprofit organization called the Rain Group, which plans to invest tens of millions of dollars to build a homeless outreach center and about 160 apartment units within walking distance. The deal includes a provision limiting the property to that purpose, or else it will revert back to the city.
