Shoplifting Task Force pilots in Burton hoping to deter repeat offenders

BURTON, Mich. (WJRT) – In response to a surge in shoplifting incidents and concerns about the impact on local businesses, the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office has established a Shoplifting Task Force. The initiative, piloted by the Burton Police Department and city leaders, aims to combat organized theft crimes in the area.

“There’s a certain level of desperation that leads folks to do these kinds of crimes,” said Prosecutor David Leyton. “We think it has gotten worse and to the point where we absolutely need to do something about it.”
