Georgia Sec. of State investigating missing money at funeral home where remains were found

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – One day after boxes of cremated remains and personal information were found at a burned out and abandoned funeral home, the Georgia Secretary of State is launching an investigation not just into what was found, but into what was missing.

The Norman Medford-Peden Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta was what’s known as a pre-need establishment. Like a lot of funeral homes, they had the ability to accept pre-payment on anything from funeral services and caskets to headstones and burial plots. But the money pre-paid by customers is now missing, and so is the funeral home’s owner.

“We want to know where that money is, what happened to that money,” said Noula Zaharis, director of the secretary of state’s cemeteries division. “Because that money should’ve been put in a trust or it should’ve been insured.”…
