Chip Kelly notebook: Ohio State OC on O-line, Will Howard | How many plays is he saving?

Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly met with the media on Tuesday for a wide-ranging interview. He began speaking about the Buckeyes’ offensive line and he’s been pleased with the progress of that unit.

“Yeah, they’re doing a good job,” Kelly said. “I think we just grade ourselves weekly and we hope that there’s progress from week 1 to 2, 2 to 3, 3 to 4. They did a really good job. I think pass protection takes all 11, so the receivers have to be open at the appropriate time. Sometimes if the receivers aren’t open, the quarterback holds the ball, so then the rush gets home a little bit more. And everybody’s like, well, you’ve got to protect. Well, it may be the receivers not getting open in time.

“So, I think all phases were clicking. (Michigan State) had an extensive third down package. I thought our guys handled it really well. And I thought our running backs, both Trey (Henderson) and Q (Quinshon Judkins), did a great job in pickup…
