‘Disheartening’: Chapel Hill firefighters fall victim to car break-ins at 3 fire stations

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (WNCN) — An uptick in car break-ins across central North Carolina is now impacting firefighters in Chapel Hill.

“These men and women come to work to protect our community,” Chapel Hill Fire Chief Jay Mebane said. “While they’re away protecting our community, their vehicles are being vandalized. It’s disheartening. It does happen. It’s unfortunate.”

Chapel Hill police told CBS 17 thieves broke into 15 cars at three different fire stations last week, impacting several firefighters. The incidents took place overnight on two separate days and suspects stole some of their personal belongings…
