Hello fellow Poles of Connecticut, yesterday I shared the news that Southington’s Polish Plate has gone up for sale by it’s owner, but today I found a bit of news that will make you happy – The Paczki will be back in Connecticut’s Big Y grocery stores by the end of this week.
I really don’t need a special reason to go grocery shopping at Big Y World Class Markets, I’ve been doing it almost weekly for over 20 years. Big Y is where I discovered Danbury’s Lesser Evil popcorn, Stosh’s Kettle Corn, and they were one of the first to strike up a deal with Arethusa. If memory serves, Big Y is also the first grocery store in Connecticut that I can remember to produce and champion their own version of a Paczki. You may find them at Stop & Shop and Shop Rite too, but Big Y was the first, and I think best at rolling out these beautiful fried pieces of filled-dough.
A Paczki is a deep-fried piece of dough which is flattened out and then filled with a sweet filling. In years past, Big Y has produced 6 different varieties: Apple, Bavarian Cream, Blueberry, Lemon, Prune, and Raspberry. Based on my experience, the prune Paczki may be the only ones left by the time you get there…
