Police Chase Suspect on Interstate 84 After He Tried Stopping Cars

An Orange County, NY man has been arrested after leading police on a chase through multiple towns including Patterson, Kent, and Carmel, New York after he was allegedly in the roadway on I-84 attempting to stop cars.

Shortly before noontime on Wednesday Putnam County 911 began receiving calls from drivers on I-84 who were reporting that a male subject was allegedly in the roadway of the westbound lanes of I-84 near I-684 and was trying to get cars driving by to stop.

According to Putnam County Sheriff Kevin J. McConville, it all started at approximately 11:30 a.m. Wednesday as drivers began to report a man in the road on 84 acting strange. McConville said that the man appeared to be attempting to stop cars, so a deputy along with a New York State Trooper were dispatched to the scene to investigate. As they arrived on the scene the man got in a vehicle that was parked nearby and took off leading police on a multiple jurisdictions pursuit.

The Sheriff explained that as the man began to flee he led multiple Sheriff’s deputies and NYS Troopers on a pursuit that started on the westbound side of I-84 and then eastbound, and then back again on the westbound side. As the pursuit continued law enforcement officers deployed spike strips on the westbound lanes of the highway in an effort to stop him.
