FALL RIVER — Saying she accepted the responsibility “not just for myself but for every woman in law enforcement and every young girl with big dreams,” Fall River Police Capt. Kelly Furtado became the city’s first female interim police chief on Tuesday.
With a row of female police officers standing to her left, and surrounded by dozens of male officers in uniform, Furtado told police and media assembled at Government Center that she wanted to adjust the FRPD’s direction, focusing on community policing .
As past commander of the department’s six-unit Special Operations Division , which has a community-oriented focus, Furtado said the entire crew should experience “the bad and the good of policing.”…
