After Christmas, Eastern North Carolina shelters brace for rise in returned pets

As the holiday season comes to a close, animal shelters across Eastern North Carolina are bracing for an influx of pet surrenders. Many shelters are already at capacity, and staff members anticipate that some families may return pets they received as gifts.

Rachel Hardin, manager of the Carteret County Humane Society Shelter, spoke about the reasons:

We do unfortunately expect a few animals to be brought back or older animals being brought back because they got a new animal…
