GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) – A class-action lawsuit aimed at restoring in-person visits at the Genesee County Jail has been dismissed, just months after the facility reintroduced face-to-face visits in July. The lawsuit alleged that the jail’s prior ban on in-person visits violated the constitutional rights of Flint children to see their incarcerated parents.
Sheriff Chris Swanson acknowledged the lawsuit’s impact, stating, “I knew from the beginning, that the issue that was brought up, was an important issue. I just didn’t need a lawsuit to bring it to my attention. But you have to deal with it.”
Lawsuits named Swanson and the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office. He explained that the legal challenge prompted a swift change in Genesee County. “What if we were to restore them, because it makes sense? We are already doing it in part; let’s just do it for everybody, starting with the kids,” he said…
