Hartland resident releases new book on Michigan food and drink

HARTLAND TWP. — You may know that Michigan-based Gerber invented baby food. But did you know Germack in Detroit is the first U.S. company to import pistachios and dye them red?

These are just a few of the facts explored in a new book co-authored by longtime Hartland resident Gail Offen. She and co-writer Jon Milan released their fourth book together, “Classic Michigan Food and Drink: The Stories Behind The Brands” with Arcadia Publishing in November. In fact, all four of their books have been saturated in Michigan themes.

“We started talking about some Michigan-themed foods a couple of years ago, and after a bit we thought, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool to write a book about how innovative Michigan has been when it comes to food?’” Offen said. “We really loved telling the story of these brands.”…
