Witch’s Hat Depot is Michigan’s Most Treasured Train Station

Imagine a bygone era of rail travel between towns and seeing this unique train depot as you pulled into the city of South Lyon in southeast Michigan. Known as the Witch’s Hat Depot, the building was once a bustling passenger depot.

The building dates back to the late 1800s and was part of the Pere Marquette and Grand Trunk Western rail lines.

The nickname for the building comes, not surprisingly, from the rounded end of the depot and the conical roof which builds to a tip and certainly looked like a witch’s hat.

The passenger service ended during the 1950s and the building fell into disuse. The local government acquired the building in the 1970s according to an historical marker on the grounds…
