CALEXICO, CA – Smugglers are getting more creative, but U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers are staying one step ahead. A routine truck inspection at the California border recently turned into a major drug bust when officers uncovered over 646 pounds of methamphetamine hidden inside a shipment of green onions.

Routine Inspection Leads to Massive Methamphetamine Seizure

On October 10, 2024, CBP officers at the Calexico Commercial Facility stopped a 63-year-old driver with a valid border crossing card. The man was behind the wheel of a commercial tractor-trailer loaded with a manifested shipment of green onions. Following standard procedures, officers referred the truck and driver for a secondary inspection.

During a closer look, officers discovered something unusual beneath the trailer’s floor. Hidden within the shipment were 608 packages containing a total of 646.61 pounds of methamphetamine. Officials estimate the street value of the drugs at $775,000.

Driver Handed Over to Homeland Security After Shocking Find

Port Director Roque Caza praised the CBP team’s efforts, saying, “This is truly an outstanding demonstration of our officer’s ability to think outside of the box and further exemplifies our adaptability to find illicit contraband no matter where narcotics are hidden.”…
