Nature Nuggets: Fall wildlife migration has started – stay alert

On a recent morning, drivers heading in both directions of U.S. Highway 34 on the west side of Loveland had to come to a screeching halt to avoid hitting a bull elk that was more interested in following a few cows than watching where he was crossing.

Although it seems a few weeks early to start seeing elk in the foothills of Loveland, they are there nonetheless, with several wildlife photographers noting they have also seen the migratory animals near Carter Lake.

And it isn’t just elk that will be more active at lower elevations and crossing roadways. Deer, turkeys and many small mammals use the ease of roadways to move around their home territories…
