Taunton police warn of phone scams claiming to be police, asking for money

TAUNTON, Mass. (WLNE) — The Taunton Police Department advises the public to be alert for scam calls from individuals who claim to be police, asking for money to be sent electronically.

During the fraudulent call, the scammers claim to be Massachusetts police, and tell the recipients they have a warrant out for their arrest, or that they owe a fine, which they claim must be paid for over the phone.

To add a false sense of legitimacy, the scam callers have hacked caller IDs to display the real Taunton Police Department business line phone numbers…
