The rebuilding and relocation of Assumption College was unfolding when Sen. John F. Kennedy, two years from the presidency, visited the campus for the unveiling of a building that carried the name of his late brother.
The Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Jr. Memorial Science Hall was dedicated on Oct. 2, 1958, with Kennedy taking part in multiple events. Jacqueline Kennedy took questions from students, including those visiting from nearby Notre Dame Academy, during a gathering in the library of La Maison Francaise. The Kennedy Foundation contributed $150,000 to the college’s effort to rebuild after the 1953 tornado that leveled parts of Central Massachusetts. One of the hardest-hit spots was the Assumption campus, then on West Boylston Street in Worcester. (The spot is now home to Quinsigamond Community College.)…
