More moolah will be in effect for Illinois employees next year.
A lot of laws are getting ready to be enacted in January in Illinois. That includes an increase on the state’s minimum wage. Last year, the state of Illinois raised their minimum wage to $14/hour. Now it’s getting ready to increase more.
The New Minimum Wage
Starting on January 1st, 2025, the new minimum wage in Illinois will be $15/hour for non-tipped employees. Employees who work in an industry that accepts gratuities will make a minimum of $9/hour. From last year, this is up $1 for non-tipped employees and $0.20 for tipped employees.
According to NBC Chicago, the law will also require that “time and one-half the regular rate” be paid after a 40 hour/week work week. Tipped employees have to make 60% of the minimum wage and employers can take up to 40% credit for tips out of the employees’ wages, according to Illinois Legal Aid.
