Shrouded among the Peninsula’s rolling hills, the aptly named Hillsborough is known for its safety , famous residents and the controversial Flintstone House . The town was also recently bestowed with the title of the wealthiest in California, according to an article published by KRON4 .
Nexstar Media Wire sourced these stats from Stacker , which used the Census Bureau’s most recent American Community Survey five-year data to find the 50 richest towns in the country based on median household income. Ties were settled by the percentage of people earning more than $200,000, and towns with populations under 1,000 residents and those classified as “census-designated places” were excluded from the study.
In Hillsborough, 69.6% of households earned over $200,000 per year — 232.7% higher than the national average. Founded in 1910, Hillsborough introduced a minimum lot size of one-half acre in 1953 to preserve “ the nature of Hillsborough ” and has been at the heart of Bay Area NIMBYism controversy since. The town has a population of 11,373 and 3,934 housing units, with 93.7% currently occupied, and its wealth is reflected in its low unemployment (5.4%) and poverty (3.1%) rate.
On the other end of the spectrum, South Portland, Maine, has the lowest median household income among the wealthiest towns in its state, at $82,489 — just 9.8% above the U.S. median.
Interestingly, Maine was one of the states with the lowest gender wage gap — the median income for men was $55,019, while women earned $52,691. Quite the opposite is true of Hillsborough. The median income for women was $108,125, with men netting more than $250,000…
