New, no-checkout Texas Sam’s Club looks to be future of retail

Over the last several years, retailers in Texas have pushed the boundaries of self-checkout. In 2022, H-E-B tried out “Fast Scan” technology , in which all of the contents inside a basket is priced at once. Earlier this year, a Dallas Kroger ended a three-year , all-self-checkout trial.

Now Sam’s Club is going with a different approach. On Oct. 17, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported the Walmart-owned club opened a new Grapevine store on the same location of a previous store that was damaged by a tornado in 2022 . But unlike other Sam’s Club stores, this 150,000-square-foot facility has no checkout counters, no self-checkout kiosks.

Instead, it implements Sam’s Club’s new Scan & Go technology. Customers will use their Sam’s Club apps to scan items that they are purchasing. Upon exiting, customers will pass under arches that will digitally check a cart and verify an online receipt. Those who may have trouble understanding the technology can speak to a Sam’s Club employee stationed at entrance and exit locations…
