STATE COLLEGE — Mechanicsburg’s Zach Rengen and Cumberland Valley’s Trent Samelko viewed the 6,328 yards of Penn State’s White Course as an attainable and attackable number Monday.

In the first round of the PIAA golf championships, it’s common for the field to force the hand early or sit back and let the shots unfold as they may. For the Wildcat and Eagle seniors, Monday was a one-two punch of both approaches.

Rengen recorded a 3-under par 69 to tie for sixth in the Class 3A contingent while Samelko punched a 1-under 71 for a t-17 mark. In the girls competition, CV’s Megan Fenton rallied for an even-par 72, setting up a t-4 result entering Tuesday’s second round…
