More than four years after its closure, Phoenix’s Metrocenter Mall is finally being torn down to make way for a new urban village.

City leaders and developers gathered on the east side of the property near Interstate 17 and Dunlap Avenue on Monday to announce the area’s new name: The Metropolitan.

“The Metropolitan is an elegant name that acknowledges the legacy of Metrocenter while demonstrating that this new development is building something unique and elevated, but accessible to all,” said Councilwoman Ann O’Brien in her presentation Monday.
