Phoenix Burn Center Receives Victims for Specialized Treatment After New Year’s Fireworks Tragedy in Aliamanu

In a solemn reminder of the risks that accompany celebratory displays, six individuals are grappling with severe burns following the Aliamanu fireworks explosion that occurred during the New Year festivities. These individuals were evacuated to the mainland for specialized care at the Diane & Bruce Halle Arizona Burn Center in Phoenix, Arizona, as reported by KITV Island News. A C-17 plane transported the victims, who will now face extensive treatments and rehabilitation that could extend over several months.

The journey for these survivors has garnered significant attention, not just for the tragedy itself, but also for the intricate medical coordination it entails. A GoFundMe campaign has been established to help cover the medical expenses for one of the patients, 29-year-old Abigail Allie. “She is incredibly smart and outgoing and she has so many friends,” said Leby Jose, her step-sister-in-law, indicating the personal toll behind the headline figures. Allie is reported by Hawaii News Now to have sustained burns on 67 percent of her body.

Comprising the emergency response effort, over 30 staff members, including military personnel and medical specialists, escorted the injured across the Pacific to ensure continuous care. “These people are all intubated. They’re all on breathing machines. They all have large percental body surface area burns,” Dr. Kevin Foster, director of the burn center, told Hawaii News Now.
